When I was 27 I knew that THIRTY was coming for me! </p><p>I spent 27, 28, and 29 already being 30 in my mind.</p><p>At 30 I was disappointed. What? Is this it?</p><p>Shortly after marking 30 I was sitting on the bus, mulling over 30, and I had a vision of crouching on pavement and sifting sparkling black sand through my fingers.</p><p><br /></p><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjjC6ELI8gyxFfium7XFfxQ28QPnQJPD00wkiesEWt7IenWnIboZJfZYWyFfd6yYqQR3ZMbSXWXzk5c5v-NOuSk19o-uwxDMd0WpH_QeuuxbTNX3C8BBdHZoSWgN6WFQltb86pWyw/s720/black+sand.jpg" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" data-original-height="480" data-original-width="720" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjjC6ELI8gyxFfium7XFfxQ28QPnQJPD00wkiesEWt7IenWnIboZJfZYWyFfd6yYqQR3ZMbSXWXzk5c5v-NOuSk19o-uwxDMd0WpH_QeuuxbTNX3C8BBdHZoSWgN6WFQltb86pWyw/s320/black+sand.jpg" width="320" /></a></div><br /><p>I didn't know what would come next. My 20's seemed to be pre-planned somehow. But the 30's? What the heck were they about? I was thinking today that I still don't know. Even with hindsight being 20/20, I can't figure it out.</p><p>And so I find myself here, in 2021, my 30th year of making things. THIRTY. Wow. What do I do now? </p><p>Seems apt, this post of mine. I thought I was going to talk about</p><p> </p><p></p><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgL9ggi5mMhWQ1znuZS5AJFHa20JWsXf3DhCDeX1hQFGtV9HvAVSSVpNX_FXwGUNQt3vlgqEmLGiqR1osHVfTvmZpqH58j1d4uTZ37eQAZElZJTvdxAuTvuAd1T7qAl4embLgqSSw/s1024/day+1+bleak+landscape.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; I have been in self-isolation due to Covid-19 since March 13, 2020. On that day I lost all the art spaces I travel to to make my art: a college, a printmaking studio, my own studio, a makerspace, a pottery studio. </span><span style="font-size: small;"><span style="font-size: small;">I also lost everything I had been doing to make a living as a visual artist: future shows and sales, teaching opportunities, commissions etc. </span></span><br />
<div>
<span style="font-size: small;"><br /></span></div>
<div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEh-bQ3Ds0KHsemVNdKCPkkSKNgRfOtLmG-KjAF6d-3H5bpG1tRuTBoc5vfSmi4JHw-nYT5IE5IYmee_v9bCgrYncu3KTIZs7MtDlAaNEBMFRbZr8pOff1raRTFJJwZW-vskJMbG6w/s1600/bobrossdrwg.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="clear: left; float: left; margin-bottom: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" data-original-height="960" data-original-width="960" height="320" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEh-bQ3Ds0KHsemVNdKCPkkSKNgRfOtLmG-KjAF6d-3H5bpG1tRuTBoc5vfSmi4JHw-nYT5IE5IYmee_v9bCgrYncu3KTIZs7MtDlAaNEBMFRbZr8pOff1raRTFJJwZW-vskJMbG6w/s320/bobrossdrwg.jpg" width="320" /></a></div>
<span style="font-size: small;">So, don't tell anyone, but money is not the reason I make art. I make art cause if I don't make art I can never be happy. So while making art, for money, is necessary, making art, even if I'm not making money, is essential for my well-being. And so I keep trying to improve my skills. Keep challenging myself. </span></div>
<div>
<span style="font-size: small;"><br /></span></div>
<div>
<span style="font-size: small;">I joined the #100dayproject on Instagram (@katieargyle7) to keep myself making something every day. Today is day 17 of 100 and I drew another artist.</span></div>
<div>
<span style="font-size: small;"><br /></span></div>
<div>
<span style="font-size: small;">It's not a good drawing, but I drew today. </span></div>
<div>
<span style="font-size: small;">And that's very good.</span></div>
<div>
<br /></div>

<br />
<i>Blog, I have missed you</i>.<br />
<br />
My blog didn't go anywhere. It was always here, ever faithful, waiting for me, wondering why I had forsaken her so...<br />
<br />
Basically I have been trying to do the online thing "right". Right=putting content on your own website etc. I shouldn't follow advice that doesn't work for me. Yrying to follow that advice stopped me dead in my tracks.<br />
<br />
I'm not blogging to monetize it. I'm not blogging to sell stuff, though if that happens that's a wonderful side effect.<br />
<br />
No I am simply blogging because I like it.<br />
And I like creating this historical document cause that's what I think this is.<br />
<br />
And so today I open the book that is 2019 and I dedicate this blog to sharing whatever comes me way.<br />
<br />

<br />
It happened to fall on the November full moon called the Beaver Moon.<br />

<br />
<br />
I was away from home and was lucky enough to see the full moon rise over Rice Lake on an unusually warm November evening. It felt like the perfect end to an astonishing year of accomplishments for me and an auspicious beginning for my next trip round the sun.<br />
<br />
<br />
<br />
Yesterday on another full moon night, this time called the Cold Moon, I committed to some art practices I'd like to keep up this year. The Cold Moon Super Moon (yes it was a super moon) will keep me honest and on track.<br />

<br />
<br />
<br />
What I decided to do was keep a daily sketchbook. I hadn't planned on it but I have added a task for myself to carve one small eraser block everyday for a year.<br />
<br />
<br />
<br />
<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">

<br />
<br />
<br />
<br />
<br />
<br />
<br />
I started with an image for the Beaver Moon and another for the Cold Moon. That's what got me hooked. So much personal satisfaction in these dime-sized prints for me.<br />
<br />
<br />
<br />
<br />
<br />
Ooo! <a href="https://www.space.com/38969-supermoon-trilogy-kicks-off-dec-3.html" target="_blank">Just found this!</a> More moon mania ahead! It IS an auspicious start to the year.<br />

Lets just say my plastic is of the <i>highest quality. ;)</i><br />
<br />
I have a good range of colours and patterns.<br />
<br />
And now that it's <span style="font-size: large;"><b>obsolete<span style="color: red;">*</span></b></span>, well, I could sell them for a pretty penny!<br />
<br />
My <a href="http://www.amaco.com/products?keywords=friendly+plastic" target="_blank">Artrepreneur</a> cohort (<i><span style="font-size: xx-small;">hello fellow Vaughan artrepreneurs</span></i>) would say this is the obvious move.<br />
<br />
But I think no.<br />
Use it.<br />
Allow it to fulfill its purpose: shiny happy things at a moderate price for fun and a bit of profit. <span style="font-size: xx-small;"><i>(I did learn something.)</i></span><br />
<br />
For me, that is its highest calling.<br />
<br />
Since I'm still a bit under the weather I will end this note here. I have a whole year to talk Friendly Plastic. Feel free to unfollow me now!<br />
<br />
<br />
<span style="color: red;">*<i><span style="color: black; font-size: x-small;">Friendly plastic continues to exist in its original form: pellets. Not much to say except I am sick today. Full on sick. I have a bad cold that started last week with an irritating weird little cough that you would think was fake. It grew to a bigger cough but no other symptoms and now I am hacking away and freezing and sneezing heading back to bed. I'm checking in to maintain my goal of writing every day on my blog this year. Posts like this are next to useless, but I am writing them in 2017.<br />
<br />
Until tomorrow.<br />

<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
</div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
I was so excited. I wanted one for a long long time and finally had a good one.</div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
I tried to learn to play it from books. </div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEiYW0ffEnyjy_j77BmZxJCqU5Aik4xTUC3tgDodWUzM3kRodM16GJhTBu-l1_-lP4GmvuOaKyMghlFcp4vrY_u-WV7NgDvSHxp50JVtHKt8ZP60BCMlVnMVuJifdpA17eV0iYIIhA/s1600/cash4ukulele.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="320" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEiYW0ffEnyjy_j77BmZxJCqU5Aik4xTUC3tgDodWUzM3kRodM16GJhTBu-l1_-lP4GmvuOaKyMghlFcp4vrY_u-WV7NgDvSHxp50JVtHKt8ZP60BCMlVnMVuJifdpA17eV0iYIIhA/s320/cash4ukulele.jpg" width="240" /></a></div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
I was highly motivated to play this song for instance. </div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEibsMEwYfFj5ZAXRVjTpQ8tEgLGEfFcZ5CnZRIPwq3mCT_7gMOAjuAUvqaW9rD9MC-vcon4xQgCZgNIfDny2aPtkNckzYYuzjc5n9lBe93RiqQgL5xQiRKF4JVE7qj0GHx7u8Nv1Q/s1600/folsomsong.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="320" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEibsMEwYfFj5ZAXRVjTpQ8tEgLGEfFcZ5CnZRIPwq3mCT_7gMOAjuAUvqaW9rD9MC-vcon4xQgCZgNIfDny2aPtkNckzYYuzjc5n9lBe93RiqQgL5xQiRKF4JVE7qj0GHx7u8Nv1Q/s320/folsomsong.jpg" width="240" /></a></div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
But learning from books is never easy for me. So I turned to youtube videos and just got frustrated. </div>

<tr><td class="tr-caption" style="text-align: center;"><i>so many songs</i></td></tr>
</tbody></table>
<div style="text-align: center;">
If I start in a class then I can follow up with the other methods. I learn better with others.</div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
Yesterday I saw one advertised on kijiji* that's not too far from me. By the end of 2 hours on an otherwise ordinary Sunday in January, this class promises that I will be singing songs by the end of it. Yay! I am signed up. </div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
I am hoping to attend some <a href="http://www.mariposafolk.com/" target="_blank">folk festivals</a> this summer. </div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEi9kuXVSaKtIWsVtBk5bFiKqs5SqB-9AB36pW4aRq5h_rpuF7_2tgkYn2pMZARbXMelx8StYs32Y4nS9OHMPtfqnE5Sws5TFvsS4eP7S4fY5Cc8VgnYhy4h-dZMl5xJS4iXHSncjQ/s1600/overlay.png" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="320" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEi9kuXVSaKtIWsVtBk5bFiKqs5SqB-9AB36pW4aRq5h_rpuF7_2tgkYn2pMZARbXMelx8StYs32Y4nS9OHMPtfqnE5Sws5TFvsS4eP7S4fY5Cc8VgnYhy4h-dZMl5xJS4iXHSncjQ/s320/overlay.png" width="230" /></a></div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
A folk festival is the right place to bring a ukulele. </div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
And so, this is one of my 2017 goals: to play ukulele at a folk festival. </div>

<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
</div>
I don't feel ready for the new year even though I was dying to see 2016 leave.<br />
2016 was a grind.<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEggHy9av-VWw6Bc5cexWYaV-ljsQ6K3RZU8z1bGfMNzA1pz15CZ39qZCtfZz9q-XowfDvAL-XsZ0UZpvBnxTkRC8ZxQXsDEjZH78U3phSGGjrpmzgL_1QfV4zHHPhUEV6QSDRBzIg/s1600/canvascu.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="clear: left; float: left; margin-bottom: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="200" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEggHy9av-VWw6Bc5cexWYaV-ljsQ6K3RZU8z1bGfMNzA1pz15CZ39qZCtfZz9q-XowfDvAL-XsZ0UZpvBnxTkRC8ZxQXsDEjZH78U3phSGGjrpmzgL_1QfV4zHHPhUEV6QSDRBzIg/s200/canvascu.jpg" width="150" /></a></div>
<br />
Good things, bad things, busy busy busy.<br />
<br />
My goal last year was to have more fun. <br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjzByV-cbXUUhF7Bk37fQIF7m2kq1wol5IVmBjiJDOC4Bxn842RhjhcI4XQ5SWPX68hFXVWB_CUbbce4sWiSzKtKUZ9cDhfVC4f3gALRgMWWaEDAHtvns6RgStiUtYTlwYF52_nxw/s1600/dancerabbits.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="clear: left; float: left; margin-bottom: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="199" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjzByV-cbXUUhF7Bk37fQIF7m2kq1wol5IVmBjiJDOC4Bxn842RhjhcI4XQ5SWPX68hFXVWB_CUbbce4sWiSzKtKUZ9cDhfVC4f3gALRgMWWaEDAHtvns6RgStiUtYTlwYF52_nxw/s200/dancerabbits.jpg" width="200" /></a></div>
Sadly, I'm not sure I accomplished this,<br />
seemingly,<br />
easy to achieve goal.<br />
<br />
I feel as though I am still trying to find my way here after our move. <br />

It's already been 5 years. <br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">

<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">

I have met and made friends with lots of great people, still I can't help but feel this isn't my "place".<br />
<br />
That's not always a bad thing.<br />
<br />
A bit of discomfort keeps you on your toes.<br />
<br />
What keeps me grounded is my desire to make things. No matter what, my drive to create and the challenge of bringing things into the world continues to be my greatest joy.<br />
<br />
<br />

That and mulling things over a cup of coffee. I really really like to do that too.<br />

<tr><td class="tr-caption" style="text-align: center;"><b>Sharon Kirsch</b>, cold wax artist, hard at work during our shared residency at Mill Pond Gallery this week</td></tr>

My intention was to blog daily on my week's exploits but it's already Wednesday and my residency, with Sharon Kirsch, ends tomorrow. We will be played out by an ABBA cover group as the feature concert in Mill Pond Park tomorrow night. So this is a summary of what I did and what I hope to do tomorrow for the finale.<br />
<br />
I wanted to focus on woodcut and woodblock prints for my residency.<br />
<table align="center" cellpadding="0" cellspacing="0" class="tr-caption-container" style="margin-left: auto; margin-right: auto; text-align: center;"><tbody>
<tr><td style="text-align: center;"><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhpfTj_eb34XPRs4HVybTtUMD6Mvvn4wL4OPOtWkHqOOcJxtCMNTWJoLiJl__FvzFVUTuy9i2ouqnUGXvb3Vdm2iE_WoGz1cOPWrj4TvVmReMIZUmbBtLp0rwWc9QCg7U81tWF6nA/s1600/RHGA2016residency1printsT.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: auto; margin-right: auto;"><img border="0" height="320" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhpfTj_eb34XPRs4HVybTtUMD6Mvvn4wL4OPOtWkHqOOcJxtCMNTWJoLiJl__FvzFVUTuy9i2ouqnUGXvb3Vdm2iE_WoGz1cOPWrj4TvVmReMIZUmbBtLp0rwWc9QCg7U81tWF6nA/s320/RHGA2016residency1printsT.jpg" width="289" /></a></td></tr>
<tr><td class="tr-caption" style="text-align: center;">5 days in residence, 5 prints. Day 6 tomorrow. Last day for week#1.</td></tr>
</tbody></table>
<br />
One of my goals was to create a print a day. I succeeded, so far, even though I had to fudge it a little on Tuesday night because I didn't have my brayer (what kind of a printmaker forgets their brayer??) and instead settled for a conte crayon rubbing of block.<br />
<br />
My other goal was to wrestle the third block of my suburbia series down to the ground finally and print the thing. I started that block in residency at Mill Pond last year. That image has fought me all the way, all year long. Yesterday I had it. I could feel it. Today I hoped to finish the carving and do a proof. I succeeded. <br />
<table align="center" cellpadding="0" cellspacing="0" class="tr-caption-container" style="margin-left: auto; margin-right: auto; text-align: center;"><tbody>
<tr><td style="text-align: center;"><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEiU4z-B0jp2stRBbwtEIdetL1ns3_MyLgcIKwszhNUqFUcW5Uwy1tpvLca1_PwIeD4Y9UCoeRb67c6LdWvF1_7-Q8XzbN4o_Sl_NJDPuJAGY4vYDbRwFSQAShXWewwDI9fYkUjfVQ/s1600/AngelasNotHome.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: auto; margin-right: auto;"><img border="0" height="211" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEiU4z-B0jp2stRBbwtEIdetL1ns3_MyLgcIKwszhNUqFUcW5Uwy1tpvLca1_PwIeD4Y9UCoeRb67c6LdWvF1_7-Q8XzbN4o_Sl_NJDPuJAGY4vYDbRwFSQAShXWewwDI9fYkUjfVQ/s320/AngelasNotHome.jpg" width="320" /></a></td></tr>
<tr align="center"><td class="tr-caption"><i> Angela's not home. Her car's not there. </i>woodcut (proof) on japanese paper, handprinted <i> </i></td></tr>
</tbody></table>
I know what I need to tweak and will get to that tomorrow and it is minor. I am satisfied and ready to begin large block number four in my - surprise - extended residency at Mill Pond Gallery! Dan Marlatt, who begins on Friday (actually Saturday, I'll be there solo on Friday) is moving out of town and the move is happening this week so he asked if I would share the space and time with him. Sharing is good as we can cover each other if we need that. Dan is so generous I was happy to help him out. It's good for me as well because now that I am in a printmaking groove I can keep pushing it. <br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjp-r1ztAR9Zj1CQI9eSoAHqMZh526ICJoJg74CIpG3myo6o72Vak3Aa6ziB7jj1GRu21RZiNra7VyOJvii50zZFR37Zvbxok_8Z3kSnmxVYk0lH22ny31i7f0VSnKkXWkBYcChng/s1600/IMG_20160404_110912385.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="320" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjp-r1ztAR9Zj1CQI9eSoAHqMZh526ICJoJg74CIpG3myo6o72Vak3Aa6ziB7jj1GRu21RZiNra7VyOJvii50zZFR37Zvbxok_8Z3kSnmxVYk0lH22ny31i7f0VSnKkXWkBYcChng/s320/IMG_20160404_110912385.jpg" width="240" /></a></div>
Primarily I want to do more colour reductions and make some decisions about a large piece of lino I have. And also, continue with my print a day. By the end of my residency next week, I want to have the final versions of these blocks/prints made so I have a bunch of new work as I move forward.redcatdancehttp://www.blogger.com/profile/14344070748073181606noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-10197927.post-14196428208463487302016-05-12T18:23:00.000-04:002016-05-12T18:23:29.088-04:00I'm the Featured Artist on the Richmond Hill Studio Tour blog this week<br />
<br />
The Richmond Hill Studio Tour isn't until the fall but with so many great artists on the tour the promotion of ourselves and our work begins early.<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjjanwJIZG0-wYlhb31rrYfpiEiSF9aH3MA6wgi28-XlAz9wtDLA95_cBGRjDognLYSHcsNATymmke_W_6kybZct9edaj3Ql3RHUu8JaDUpzM9QUD0sLPP431Ez_M0UXuUwvNMw_A/s1600/KatieArgyleWeb.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="248" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjjanwJIZG0-wYlhb31rrYfpiEiSF9aH3MA6wgi28-XlAz9wtDLA95_cBGRjDognLYSHcsNATymmke_W_6kybZct9edaj3Ql3RHUu8JaDUpzM9QUD0sLPP431Ez_M0UXuUwvNMw_A/s320/KatieArgyleWeb.jpg" width="320" /></a></div>
<br />
To that end here is the blog post related to my work and to what I will showcase on the tour. <br /><br />
<a href="http://richmondhillstudiotour.blogspot.ca/2016/05/katie-argyle-its-all-in-black-and-white.html" target="_blank">http://richmondhillstudiotour.blogspot.ca/2016/05/katie-argyle-its-all-in-black-and-white.html</a><br />
<br />
I am now in the planning stages of what I would like to create for the
tour. It's a juggling act that gets tougher as the summer comes on. This
is my busy time of year. I have to be super-organized and that isn't an
easy thing. I build flexibility into every day just in case I have to
shift gears. Overall, I have a good idea of where I need to be by
when.<br />
<br />
Of course, when I lose my way there are the ever-present hard deadlines and the fear of preesnting sub-par work *shudder* <br />
<br />
<br />

<br />
The
Richmond Hill Studio is the weekend of October 15h and 16th. I will be
in the tea room of the Burr House at 528 Carrville Road, Richmond Hill.<br />

Pt. 1 (and no, not that I am finally blogging again, though that *is* kind of newsworthy.)Dear Faithful Reader:<br />

<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhAjX96UncGPgjaJqiLleau2DBthc4p_LZb58eqEd8_N3fDZViax_4EbIgVU0cU2WApDmrHQCEuNq8QVy7M6L8aft8NJBDwom26tolX5cZyfCmXcpw_NEYNtl1My689QYXHGRnroQ/s1600/reading-310397_640.png" imageanchor="1" style="clear: left; float: left; margin-bottom: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="200" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhAjX96UncGPgjaJqiLleau2DBthc4p_LZb58eqEd8_N3fDZViax_4EbIgVU0cU2WApDmrHQCEuNq8QVy7M6L8aft8NJBDwom26tolX5cZyfCmXcpw_NEYNtl1My689QYXHGRnroQ/s200/reading-310397_640.png" width="200" /></a></div>
<br />
<br />
As you know, I have been neglecting my blog. Why? Why did I do that to you, to me, to us? Nevermind faithful, forgiving, reader. Lets put things behind us and more ever forward! I have news and updates and a whole bunch of stuff to report.<br />
<br />
I suppose that's the advantage of never updating. You end up with stuff to say.<br />
<br />
<br />
<br />
So, since last year I can tell you I have won two awards! One for painting and one for ceramics!<br />
In November 2015 I won the Inaugural RHGA York Region Open Juried Show Award of Merit for my painting called Still Life-Cold Version.<br />

And at the 2016 Hill Potters' Guild Spring Sale I shared the Inaugural Mayor's Choice Award with my ceramics collaborative potter friend Minda Davis for our work in the form of a large cone 6 stoneware thrown and Mishima decorated bowl called "Hey! I'm Empty!"<br />

They have heard that prints were being shown and they have made the effort to drop by and look. Many visitors want to make prints but have no access locally to a press of any size. One person has been specifically looking for a local printmaker for 6 YEARS. Others had no idea how prints were really made and once they see the big block and the carving tools and the finished prints they appreciate the work even more. It's about the most an artist can hope for when showing their work I think.</div>

<div style="text-align: center;">
This first step begins the process that makes this image my own which is slightly different from reality as it passes through my brain and into my carving hand. </div>
<table cellpadding="0" cellspacing="0" class="tr-caption-container" style="margin-left: auto; margin-right: auto; text-align: left;"><tbody>
<tr><td style="text-align: center;"><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjQ5fJ0QNTE58VPa9MVPffCB9wvJh26eISLfE344UxPC-8P2nzOyPszE1BivfHy5P-6YLdJa8W2QPfEkfEupAsW5_ToPxooTYmm-E80XuKRQ8fK0JMVtkMYgRW8MLDashxTZZ8Crg/s1600/ezcutt.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: auto; margin-right: auto;"><img border="0" height="271" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjQ5fJ0QNTE58VPa9MVPffCB9wvJh26eISLfE344UxPC-8P2nzOyPszE1BivfHy5P-6YLdJa8W2QPfEkfEupAsW5_ToPxooTYmm-E80XuKRQ8fK0JMVtkMYgRW8MLDashxTZZ8Crg/s320/ezcutt.jpg" width="320" /></a></td></tr>
<tr><td class="tr-caption" style="text-align: center;">FYI: EZcut lino makes for a good eraser.</td></tr>
</tbody></table>
<div style="text-align: center;">
As an unexpected bonus I decided on an image to paint for one of my reclaimed canvases but not the big one. </div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjQfEL3SAKU5bobibs9Z9VfwnKGloXAlQBX7BnUDgQIA5Q5mdKqxc_XpRCC1XCS0ZNINbJ1T_LospL-y0tfFtAv88xo5XXx1Gz9BGw6Ii_uBFxgeQ6MyXgpbCLzrfTe722wIouyog/s1600/worksipt.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="320" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjQfEL3SAKU5bobibs9Z9VfwnKGloXAlQBX7BnUDgQIA5Q5mdKqxc_XpRCC1XCS0ZNINbJ1T_LospL-y0tfFtAv88xo5XXx1Gz9BGw6Ii_uBFxgeQ6MyXgpbCLzrfTe722wIouyog/s320/worksipt.jpg" width="180" /></a></div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
I am going to put most of my energy into the woodcut since it is harder for me to find the space to carve than it is to paint on an easel. I want to use my time in residence in the best way I can for me.</div>

Quiet Sunday at the Gallery. I met Roya today. She was the perfect person to drop in. (Hi Roya!) Dan came by and we had a good artist talk and a couple pretty much ran through the whole exhibit without saying a word, though I heard them laughing upstairs, which is good cause my funny things are up there.<br />
<table align="center" cellpadding="0" cellspacing="0" class="tr-caption-container" style="margin-left: auto; margin-right: auto; text-align: center;"><tbody>

<tr><td class="tr-caption" style="text-align: center;">I made coffee and have been leaving my keys everywhere. Just like home.</td></tr>
</tbody></table>
I made big progress today. After viewing image after image on the computer I've chosen my next subject for a large scale woodcut in my suburbs series. Ironically it came from an image I took this morning, and wasn't even on the hard drive, though what I will paint was, but I took that image a day ago. So, very fresh work. Love that.<br />

<tr><td class="tr-caption" style="text-align: center;">garden with deer</td></tr>

I started transferring the image to the block but have another hour or so before I complete it. I placed the grid onto my canvas but left it at that. No idea what will go on my extra large canvas. In every way it is a blank to me. Long workday today. Hope to make great progress!<br />

<div style="text-align: left;">
My first real working day in residency was spent sorting myself out. And in between that I had a few visitors.</div>
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjv3kwqktUv9jsIszo8IGn3_QAzsdAD-1GcSbp2e-8etqG4si_x6imjLCC8VXtX1AubkzI-rU23Kk6crYUOaSQIoMm4w3ILEb1j44jcElFlRriUwDDvPBnJq2uIwZ2PWOZemso71w/s1600/redbirdT.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="320" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjv3kwqktUv9jsIszo8IGn3_QAzsdAD-1GcSbp2e-8etqG4si_x6imjLCC8VXtX1AubkzI-rU23Kk6crYUOaSQIoMm4w3ILEb1j44jcElFlRriUwDDvPBnJq2uIwZ2PWOZemso71w/s320/redbirdT.jpg" width="180" /></a></div>
My first visitor was a father with his daughter who were looking for a bathroom for her. So my good deed for the day was accomplished. Later my collaborative ceramic friend Minda came by with her husband and they looked at my work and at the same time another artist dropped in.<br />
<br />
The Gallery was quiet but I expected it.<br />
<br />
I couldn't decide what to do, or even what to choose to do, so I did a simple task of reclaiming some canvases. <br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEixegWwpxgqjlOEiayp_orDfawazzPahA_bYs0Luorxif3kncu6QtynC6NRiaz3I5aMh5_dxak8Ho1VKuvGKiv4Vw9NAR92wXSks_7lQvpbr2Lg9zrdWha-bWnCr1CpkUFYPqjiNA/s1600/gessoT.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="320" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEixegWwpxgqjlOEiayp_orDfawazzPahA_bYs0Luorxif3kncu6QtynC6NRiaz3I5aMh5_dxak8Ho1VKuvGKiv4Vw9NAR92wXSks_7lQvpbr2Lg9zrdWha-bWnCr1CpkUFYPqjiNA/s320/gessoT.jpg" width="180" /></a></div>
Even this simple gessoing is a pain in my small work spaces. But here I worked outside, using the garden hose to first wash the canvases off (5 years in storage) and then right after painting it rained.<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEi2i4ImmAfvsGNcmxZb4vnvqAOp93ozlEDVkckcLoz6wG63fwC1xFN9obH-k38bOnSxt-NivRBDEVryQ_zrJik0h0sOf1WthLRh8j3rKtAAQ_4NMRHaEFunizkGbLq-Jpdmnzut8g/s1600/gesso2T.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="320" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEi2i4ImmAfvsGNcmxZb4vnvqAOp93ozlEDVkckcLoz6wG63fwC1xFN9obH-k38bOnSxt-NivRBDEVryQ_zrJik0h0sOf1WthLRh8j3rKtAAQ_4NMRHaEFunizkGbLq-Jpdmnzut8g/s320/gesso2T.jpg" width="180" /></a></div>
No harm done. I hope to get something onto them today or tomorrow. I want to start.<br />

The Gallery is given over to the artist or artists to display their work
and to make work. For me, it is an opportunity to simply see my work. I
have one small wall in my studio, to see my artwork. It took me the whole day to transport, and install my work. The labels are done for the downstairs area but much is left to do upstairs. I'll spend some of the (short) day today doing that but have to begin my work today. <br />

My plans for the week including carving a block a day for my residency and making a multi-image print representing my time here. In addition I will start my next large scale suburban-themed woodcut and a large scale painting. Topic still to be decided. These projects will continue into my second residency at the end of the month. <br />

<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgkofBEqock4-e4PFfZOjM9zEbOCOAwWh25uQxXnU0jCgeflyFXBmdiZfayJhgKZQ_rUTXd1ES09Ny9B-QF7YLgOC7Ud5L0ZCnnFkfR_kFYrwFlF8l1KbhFUV5UBuevAqC9VQXfug/s1600/AITY2015promoposter.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="320" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgkofBEqock4-e4PFfZOjM9zEbOCOAwWh25uQxXnU0jCgeflyFXBmdiZfayJhgKZQ_rUTXd1ES09Ny9B-QF7YLgOC7Ud5L0ZCnnFkfR_kFYrwFlF8l1KbhFUV5UBuevAqC9VQXfug/s320/AITY2015promoposter.jpg" width="252" /></a></div>
I chose to apply to this show because for the past 3 years I have tried to make it out to Elora to see the Halloween Twilight Zoo, sculptural monsters that artist Tim Murton creates and installs on the buildings in the town.<br />
<br />
Here's a link: <a href="https://www.facebook.com/twilightzoo/photos_stream" target="_blank">The Twilight Zoo</a><br />
<br />
I figured if a town allows and encourages that kind of thing then it's probably a good place for me to be.<br />
<br />
And I was right. <br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEiapHECO2mvPMtbB6lAYDEv5B6qykwh8CKZMwjkaWjDfNAONgtF3diPQ_FSYhsegkIYJ6rwZagey5EiJd4RlRFGoG0id2xepCUjTjiNs1yWEWao38pRFWjM-fVzK-iUfZx4xmDNew/s1600/IMG_20150704_174322906_HDR.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="320" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEiapHECO2mvPMtbB6lAYDEv5B6qykwh8CKZMwjkaWjDfNAONgtF3diPQ_FSYhsegkIYJ6rwZagey5EiJd4RlRFGoG0id2xepCUjTjiNs1yWEWao38pRFWjM-fVzK-iUfZx4xmDNew/s320/IMG_20150704_174322906_HDR.jpg" width="180" /></a></div>
And there were monsters at our venue.<br />
<table align="center" cellpadding="0" cellspacing="0" class="tr-caption-container" style="margin-left: auto; margin-right: auto; text-align: center;"><tbody>
<tr><td style="text-align: center;"><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEiD6si_2wcpDTHc0OIudSsvln5GV9GP34AKW3NCkxNes42bzy-W2qGHE-1CkeirpSj2ftNHwqZsJwsF9cKTrqbfZsrZfQtqg6RXPCTQzqNiW10xxLeZ2lNLgh_uiSC1SnXR2gByFQ/s1600/IMG_20150704_174412410_HDR.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: auto; margin-right: auto;"><img border="0" height="320" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEiD6si_2wcpDTHc0OIudSsvln5GV9GP34AKW3NCkxNes42bzy-W2qGHE-1CkeirpSj2ftNHwqZsJwsF9cKTrqbfZsrZfQtqg6RXPCTQzqNiW10xxLeZ2lNLgh_uiSC1SnXR2gByFQ/s320/IMG_20150704_174412410_HDR.jpg" width="180" /></a></td></tr>

<br />
<br />
Having experienced many outdoor events and venues, this one ranks near the top in terms of me feeling valued as an artist. This is not always the case. <br />
<br />
At Art in the Yard the volunteers were fantastic.<br />
<table align="center" cellpadding="0" cellspacing="0" class="tr-caption-container" style="margin-left: auto; margin-right: auto; text-align: center;"><tbody>

<tr><td class="tr-caption" style="text-align: center;">Donna, a fantastic volunteer.</td></tr>
</tbody></table>
It was a hot summer weekend, well it was a perfect weekend actually, and we were offered slices of watermelon, pitchers of cold lemonade, water and fruit punch.<br />

<tr><td class="tr-caption" style="text-align: center;">Sarah Gardiner, show organizer (!) bringing us watermelon.</td></tr>
</tbody></table>
It was just a nice, thoughtful gesture. Every hour someone was asking if they could get us something, if we needed a break, if they could booth sit for us.<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
</div>
In addition, I met several board members who introduced themselves, asked how the show was going, wanted to know what was happening from my perspective. It was all very impressive.<br />
<br />
<table align="center" cellpadding="0" cellspacing="0" class="tr-caption-container" style="margin-left: auto; margin-right: auto; text-align: center;"><tbody>

<tr><td class="tr-caption" style="text-align: center;">my booth</td><td class="tr-caption" style="text-align: center;"><br /></td></tr>
</tbody></table>
<br />
Astonishingly, not one person haggled with me. Not one. I don't think that has ever happened at an art show to me before. I asked my neighbour and she had the same experience.<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhTn8iHHSrPJfB9o9cqr-zyOyXHH0nmVhQ3RGQDO30A40mjxJ187EESeNIdbyc9p2p8DMbYrkHIycG8sLik-3UNe7-1anZ9vvHwvqKkxPBiw_LE2ZBKs6VtWYCbZuAtgsYTDjyPJg/s1600/IMG_20150704_165725542.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="320" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhTn8iHHSrPJfB9o9cqr-zyOyXHH0nmVhQ3RGQDO30A40mjxJ187EESeNIdbyc9p2p8DMbYrkHIycG8sLik-3UNe7-1anZ9vvHwvqKkxPBiw_LE2ZBKs6VtWYCbZuAtgsYTDjyPJg/s320/IMG_20150704_165725542.jpg" width="180" /></a></div>
<br />
The attendance at the show didn't seem super high, though
at times it was quite crowded, but the space we occupied was big. So my
perception could be far from the truth of it.<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhOEMtL0Pq_jgqyYvNZSjCBMXy8SPWLzGDFURIqBQtaOSJ-AwAsuL1w0BZlGgBJzvHXwJoP2otmXC34cyrGzvBmkActbgL1Z0RfXDKk17PBa1R-N6_yBwEhKQcg-vx8UED_pghZHQ/s1600/IMG_20150704_165718288.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="180" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhOEMtL0Pq_jgqyYvNZSjCBMXy8SPWLzGDFURIqBQtaOSJ-AwAsuL1w0BZlGgBJzvHXwJoP2otmXC34cyrGzvBmkActbgL1Z0RfXDKk17PBa1R-N6_yBwEhKQcg-vx8UED_pghZHQ/s320/IMG_20150704_165718288.jpg" width="320" /></a></div>
What was apparent though was this was a crowd of art lovers and they
were all appreciative of seeing art and artists. I wish I could tell you
this happens all the time but it is rare.<br />
<br />

I thank the people of Elora, and those who attended the show, and the Elora Center for the Arts for their hard work and thoughtfulness toward the artists. May this show, and all their other ventures throughout the year, bring them success. <br />

<br />
I've spent every day, except maybe 3, of the last 5 weeks at the pottery studio. The result? Close to 80 one of a kind ceramic objects, mostly functional food safe vessels. Plus I have over 50 ceramic pendants and several sculptures. I am having a great time moving my motifs onto the ceramic form. There is much to consider and I like that. While I do not throw most of these pieces, once thrown and sufficiently dry, they are in my hands. All the drawing, carving, painting, underglazing, waxing, glazing, bisque and glaze firings are up to me with help from my fellow pottery guild members when needed. <br />
<br />

The push for all this creative output came from the realization that I am in quite a few shows this year. And as usual, the year has flown by. Already half of 2015 is behind us. I have felt "behind" since February and certainly since learning I was accepted into most of the shows I applied to. I am grateful but I have a real working year this year. Since moving to Richmond Hill from Ottawa I have worked to regain my footing and I can say I finally feel grounded now. It;s no wonder, really, that I am "all of a sudden" busy. I prefer it this way.<br />
<br />
And with that, my first summer art show* is this weekend in Elora, Ontario. <br />

<a href="http://www.eloracentreforthearts.ca/index.cfm?page=ArtintheYard2015" target="_blank">Art in The Yard</a> is in the yard of the Elora Centre for the Arts. The show is this Saturday and Sunday, July 4th and 5th, from 10-5pm, which are very decent hours for a summer outdoor event. This will be the first time I am only presenting ceramic work. <br />

Those who know me will see many familiar motifs. Ceramics are such a labour-intensive, time-consuming,
planning-ahead-required, art form. So very different from directly
carving on a wood or lino block or painting on a canvas. I like the
challenge clay offers and the feeling of these things in my hands.<br />
