October Memoir and Blog Challenge: relationships #3

Please Call First

I used to have a casual relationship with Death.
I'd invite him to show up in my artwork,
my writing,
my wondering about where we go next
Death brought me design ideas
skulls wearing hats
and big black sunglasses
Skeletons carrying suitcases
ready to travel
Death takes a holiday
was a recurring motif
These days my relationship with Death
is more intimate
I no longer feel he's a distant destination in a
tourist brochure
This year he seems to be waiting at the stops along my route
This year he's visited several familiar venues
and left his calling card
I'd like a formal relationship with Death now.
I want him to understand he needs to call first before he drops by.

Very nice. I laughed at the end. But I'm not sure it's funny. That's a great reaction for a poem to elicit!

I LOVE this poem. It is SO my relationship with death. I love your writing voice: your penetrating observation, seemingly casual descriptions cloaking a sharp satire and wry humour and your unexpected revelation of compassion and poignancy.
This one is my favourite. I want to copy it with your signature and put it where I can read it regularly. Do you mind? Let me know when you collect these into a chapbook I can buy.

Very cool poem. Have you been writing poetry all this time? I'm blown away.

Love the poem! When you were turning on the next to the last line with the "formal relationship" I wondered, "Where's she going?" and then your great last line: Pow!

Hah, your work is always enjoyable. I'd also appreciate Death informing me in advance of a visit -- so I could make sure I wasn't home. That's one individual I wouldn't want to share a drink with.

This is my favorite one yet. I love the calling card and the ending line.

A great piece!
